DiversiD Diaries - Issue 2 - Kerri Moore

Kerri Moore

A little about me,

I'm Kerri Aka K-Bear (I'm a hugger hence nickname) I'm 45 oh sorry 46, i forgot about my last b'day lol. I'm neurodiverse with Fibromyalgia a published petite curvy Model currently not working who just loves second hand shopping/bargain hunting. I am very sensory orientated love faux fur and label free clothing.

@ruchedandready Topsy curvy, Tommy Hilfiger favourite fashion brand as well as Rebel Reign a new Liverpool based fashion designer. TK maxx and charity shopping my favourite things to do to get that dopamine fix.

December is a time that if your anything like me we might need to tighten our belt even more so, as we focus on "the most wonderful time of the year" we look too buy gifts and spend time with our precious loved ones.

For the last few years "cost of living crisis" is something that has become a familiar term within our vocabulary there’s been no escaping the daily barrage from media outlets about inflation, economics, fiscal predictions, and the global dynamics inciting fear over spending. Households generally speaking have less disposable income, and we might have to be mindful of what we spend our money on, as the cost of everything has risen from fuel prices to everyday food items.

Over the three years between May 2021 and May 2024 food prices rose by 30.6%. It previously took over 13 years, from January 2008 to May 2021, for average food prices to rise by the same amount. (House of commons research briefing July 2024 Rising cost of living in UK...https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-9428/)

• Sustainable fashion market statistic: 57% of Britons see sustainability as important for fashion. Sustainability has risen in importance in 2024, following a drop in interest in 2023 as incomes were squeezed.

Tamara Sender Ceron, Mintel’s Associate Director, Fashion Retail. Tamara has over 12 years of expertise in analysing changing consumer behaviour, industry trends and key innovations in fashion retail.

Its no wonder that the likes of second hand selling sites like depop, vinted, eBay are seeing increased popularity with eBay recently sponsoring Love Island there's a prediction that second hand fashion will make up 10% of global fashion sales.

UK's high street fashion sales declined by 6.7 per cent in June, marking ten consecutive months of negative figures, as per BDO

(Fibre2fashion news desk)

I think we as consumers have changed our spending habits our go too fast fashion stores the likes of Primark, Shien, H&M prices have increased where it's no longer deemed cheap or maybe we are just becoming more aware, and are more precious about spending our money, not only that it's the idea it's fast fashion and therefore not always ethically produced, and might only be worn a few times before it ends in landfill.

Alex Crumbie produced an article in Ethical Consumer which sums it up nicely "Much modern clothing is not made to last. Due to super-fast production, designs are generally not well stress-tested before sale, and cheap synthetic fabrics are used in order to keep costs low. Much of it will end up in landfill after only being worn a handful of times". (Alex Crumbie ethical consumer)

Within my current home town of Kirkby which has a population of 152,500 there is 6 charity shops so it's a great place to go shopping for that second hand piece, some of my favourite purchases are

Cashmere grey M&S scarf for £2

Zara silk shirt dress £19.99 from British Red cross

Urban code London faux fur animal print £10 local hospice charity shop.

One piece of advice that was always shared with me is fashion will always come back around maybe a slight alteration but that is something that has stuck with me and why I now no longer throw away those leopard print pieces as I know they will serve me multiple years, might also be the reason why I have overflowing abundance of scarfs lol..... who can remember the trousers with skirt overlay that was fashionable making a comeback from the 80's, or leopard print, or metallic making intermittent appearances on the catwalk?

It's no coincidence that This Morning has had Jen Graham aka Charity shop girl make appearances this year on the popular morning show.

Jen has seen increased popularity as she shares her charity shop hauls across social media platforms. Jen has been charity shopping since she was 17 years old, she's on a mission too prove you can shop second-hand and be on trend she also shares her top tips on how to rewear, recycle and resell your clobber - and make some serious cash at the same time! Jen has been placed as "one to watch" on TikTok @charityshopgirlcsg her page making the daily mail her Facebook page has 21k followers and TikTok just over 84k.
